I loved marvel movies ever since I was younger. There were not many female superheroes to look up to except Black Widow so naturally, I clung to her. The fact that she was a badass, had red hair I adored and her name was similar to mine. All that only amplified my adoration for her.

The most recent Marvel movies were not my cup of tea. I mean it’s still ok I guess but there’s just too much of it and it just lost its value. I feel like only new or really dedicated fans can keep up with the marvel timeline, but I personally lost the marvel track some time ago. Even though the humor was always part of marvel movies, recently it felt like a comedy factor was all they have to offer.

Generally speaking, they did not do Black Widow justice so far.

Sure her first appearances were in a time when a hot young woman in a tight suit was nothing but something for guys to look at. Nice touch to the movies. It was a different time where no one objected to the clear objectification. But I’m not getting into that now.

All I’m trying to say is I had very low expectations for the Black Widow’s own movie.

I was so scared I was just gonna see Scarlet Johanson in a hot tight suit showing off her perfect body with zero plot whatsoever.

I haven’t even watched the trailer. All I wanted to do was quickly rip off the bandaid and get it over with. The movie I was hoping to see as a teenager, the only story that actually interested me, and I did zero research beforehand to not get disappointed before the movie itself.

After finishing the Black Widow movie I was left with great relief and long lost love for Natasha Romanov.

There are several reasons why I think the Black Widow was totally awesome.

Female director.

The main thing that made this movie so great and not at all what I was expecting it to be. (2 hours of sexy girls fighting)

The first indication I got that this might not be directed by a guy was when Natasha gets to change her shirt and it’s not in any sexy way and she’s facing away from the camera. A little thing I’m totally not used to but I appreciate it dearly.

Florence Pugh.

As I didn’t google the cast beforehand this was a nice surprise for me and she was honestly great in it. I fell for her in Little women and even though I found myself in Jo March, Pugs character in Little women Amy was a close second.

Scarlet Johanson was amazing as always and I could not imagine a better person to represent Natasha.

Plenty of female characters.

Always great to see that. Even better when they’re being real like:

Sisters banter between Natasha and Yelena.

Admiration of pockets on Yelenas jacket- that’s how most women talk and it was so nice to see that in a movie.

Addressing the Superhero landing pose- A M A Z I N G.

Their odd little family.

No matter how old you are or the fact that you are a famous superhero- your mum is always gonna lecture you about not hunching.  And you’re always gonna interrupt one another and talk all at once. That’s what real families do. They bitch a lot.

Plot.

I don’t know if it was because I haven’t seen a movie in a long time, or anything by marvel in particular in a while but I found it very interesting. The “keeping my phone down” kind of interesting.

Or it might be because I think the whole concept of creating a black widow- a trained female soldier is just so interesting. There was a movie called “Naked weapon” made in 2002 about a similar thing. Taking young girls and turning them into a weapon of destruction. I saw it quite young and never got over it. Then I saw Iron man and Natasha in it and I was hooked.

The message.

The message of the Black widow movie is quite simple: Creating your own choices. That might not be something that resonates with everyone but for some of us, this one hits pretty hard. To be able to make your own choices is an underrated privilege.

The sassy mentions of avengers.

The Black widow takes part before the Infinity war and doesn’t affect the avengers’ movies plot at all. Even though they got mentioned quite a lot but it was in a slightly passive-aggressive way and I was loving it.

I understand why this movie might not get high ratings or any positive feedback. It lacked nudity, plot twist, romantic or sexual interest, or any controversial topic. (I’m not counting the whole mind control thing)

It was just a story of a girl confronting her past.

I think it was great and you should watch it.

I am glad to read your review. I felt the same way and after reading your review. I think I am also ready to put away my same fears and watch this work Scarlet took control of and produced.
