COVID-19 broke my believes and life views. We’re living history textbook content right now and it’s safe to say the world would never be the same as we knew it.
I used to believe things were black and white, but mostly grey. I believed everything was too complicated to ever apply the universal judgemental pattern on everyone. Treat every situation individually. See different points of view. Listen with an open mind. Empathy was the key and my compassion often led me to emotional hell.
Obviously, some situation was plainly bad without any need to examine it further just as some situations were purely good. But the majority of the world was just different shades of grey. You did bad but I understood why you were grey. You did good for selfish reasons, you were grey.
COVID-19 made my judgment pretty simple- black and white.
The crisis brought the best and the worst in humanity. I feel like every human encounter I had since the pandemic outburst was either good or bad. No one made me question their motives and I can’t decide whether people change or I did.
COVID-19 made us realize what’s really important and who is really important. It made us realize how underappreciated medical workers or cashiers really are and how incredibly useless is our fuzz over pseudo-celebrities.
I’m sorry this is gonna be hard to hear but just think about every sportsman, actor, or influencer right now. Their whole career being canceled with a blink of an eye and I don’t feel a single pity for them. They could share a countless number of videos pitying themselves about having to cancel their show or won’t play their favorite sport but the truth is I don’t give a single fuck. There are way more important things to worry about right now.
They are the ones who are gonna sit at home complain about social isolation with their million dollars salary sitting in their bank accounts while the rest of us risk our lives for a few bucks.
Lionel Messi earns 40mil Euro per year. Auston Matthews makes almost 16milions $ per year. Kylie Jenner is a billionaire and let’s not forget Jeff Bazos’s wealth of around 140bilion $.
Scientists have been begging for research funds for years but due to Trump’s administration they only got personal and budget cuts over the last 3 years.
I know all of the TV shows, movies, or live music are making our quarantine much bearable and I appreciate their work. But there are many more important professions right now.
The worst is the privileged treatment these celebrities get. It’s shown in a simple thing as getting the coronavirus test while the rest of the country waits in line for a test they are never gonna get because they’re not rich and famous and have to work despite their symptoms.
I know people with the COVID-19 symptoms and travel history who still needs to show up to work every day because they simply can’t take days off. Obviously, those people all live in America with their beloved dysfunctional healthcare system.
It’s so nice of celebrities to encourage their fans to stay home and isolate themselves as they do.
I wish all the health for those celebrities already diagnosed with the COVID-19
But honey, you are isolated in a fucking mansion with a couple of butlers and a simple thing as access to healthcare. You have no idea what these people go through.
Even I can’t relate to those people either, because my employer provides for me.
We were provided with at least some protection equipment such as masks or gloves or protection glass for our pharmacy, regulation of incoming patients, or disinfection. Those who were too afraid could take the days off and parents could stay with their kids. The rest of us got a financial bonus, a budget to spent on Immuno-boosting supplements or vitamins, and plenty of thank you emails.
This pandemic showed which corporations really care for their employees and who is in it just for the profit.
During this pandemic, people have shown incredible kindness and I try my hardest to focus on the good, even when the positive stories alternate with the bad ones.
It’s an endless battle of good vs. bad.
There is a donation going on in my country to financially support hospitals and to cover the demand for protective equipment for medical workers. People coming together to support a good cause.
Staying on the same topic it’s ridiculous that the state is unable to provide so the general population needs to chip in to cover the hospital’s bills.
A few days ago we had a patient picking up her prescription drugs when she suddenly brought up big chocolate from her purse and gave it to my colleague. She said we have it tough these days so she brought us something sweet.
The same day came this old man who skipped the whole line of people patiently waiting in the queue with appropriate distance in between them. We got newly instilled protection glass on our pharmacy counter and this old man tried to push his bare hand holding the coins over the glass to my colleague because he came for just some bandages. My colleague was still dealing with her own patient at that moment so we all got super baffled by this dude completely ignoring not only the health recommendations but also all of the decent manners.
There was this lady who came into the drug store saying:” I was here yesterday and you told me you didn’t have any face masks so I made you some” and brought the cashier’s homemade facemasks.
I saw this group of frat boys laughing at a group of girls wearing a face mask because and I quote: “how dumb they look”.
I know many people who isolated themselves to keep others safe.
On the other hand, there are plenty of people who came from infected areas and refused to come clean endangering everyone they came in contact with.
Dominos pizza sent out free pizza to our colleagues in the other pharmacy just out of kindness.
There were cases of people calling up an ambulance for made-up symptoms of coronavirus only to videotape the paramedics in their protective equipment and those bastards actually had the audacity to laugh to the paramedics’ faces.
State implementing strict rules to protect their citizens.
Citizens trying to fuck with the restrictions and plainly ignoring all of the precautions.
Christiano Ronaldo transforming his hotels into hospitals where the COVID-19 would be treated free of charge. He would even cover the salaries of the doctors and other workers.
Fifa 2020 being canceled and postponed till summer 2021, while organizers demand financial retribution. From who? No offense, the world has bigger issues than some dudes not kicking a ball across the field.
Students all over my country volunteer to help out in the field of their study or volunteer to babysit the kids of the doctors or nurses who needs to keep working.
Then this happened:
Read the last sentence again, please.
We build our whole society, our whole security on this imaginary money nobody’s supposed to touch.
People started to learn how to sew so they can make their homemade face masks and give them to those in need for free or very little money.
People selling respirators for unholy money.
Stores giving antiseptic gels and face mask kits to the elderly for free.
My friend shared this story on her Instagram story. She was protected with face masks and got called out by a group of seven 60+ years old without a single protection mask, laughing at her expanse, calling at her that she shouldn’t be afraid of them cuz they won’t bite.
My sister is using her days of school to make face masks for our whole family back home and my her boyfriend’s family as well.
There are people spreading dumb hoaxes over the internet, spreading panic and misinformation for no other reason than to watch the world burn.
Food delivery platforms offer their services free of charge for elderly people.
People coming back from Italy a day before the mandatory quarantine starts to avoid undergoing this quarantine.
Neighbors volunteering to shop groceries for their elderly neighbors.
It’s a freaking rollercoaster of good and bad. Nothing in between.
Every single action you took or didn’t determine you in my eyes of judgment and the spectrum is very transparent.
Why is everyone stocking up on toilet paper? Why is that our number one priority?
Let me tell you why, as I read some really cool explanation by a psychologist that gave me goosebumps and I can’t stop thinking about it ever since.
We buy toilet paper in bulk because we try to maintain our dignity.
We came to a point when there is nothing worse than our disrupted comfort or routine. There is nothing worse than having nothing to wipe your butt with.
So let’s deal with this crisis with as much dignity as we can. Be good. That’s the ONLY thing that matters right now. Be responsible, rational, careful, safe, and kind to one another. Let this pandemic bring the best in you.
