Isn’t it romantic is a 2019 Netflix original movie released at Valentine and I’m getting to it pretty late I know. Even though I thought it was worth watching I just never pushed myself all the way to actually watch it. My sister messaged me back then saying that Isn’t it romantic remind her of me and I was like Ok I’ll watch it later. 7 months later I finally did. I know millennials use “it me” every time and it’s already on the verge between cringy and cute but It totally me.
Here is why.
Isn’t it romantic is about a girl named Natalie, chubby blonde, working her ass off as an architect? She’s passionate about her work but doesn’t get much recognition. Her coworkers push her around cuz she’s so nice and can’t say no to anybody. She has a very low opinion of herself. Natalie is living in New York in a small apartment with her small white dog who is cute as hell but doesn’t do shit.
She’s the biggest cynic when it comes to love and everything love related and she often falls into long rants about romance and how everything sucks. One time as she was being robbed, because that’s how great her life is, she got hit in the head and woke up as the main character of her own personal romantic comedy.
Suddenly everything is peachy. Everything is perfect. New York doesn’t smell anymore. People are kind. She’s successful at her work. Men go nuts for her. Her wardrobe is spectacular. She got every shoe she ever wanted. Her dog listens to her commands. People randomly start singing and dancing at any time of the day. She fucks Liam Hemsworth. Everyone speaks in quotes and cliches. Basically is a typical rom-com.
And it’s PG-13.
The sad part is that Natalie knows this world is not real. She’s the only one who knows this romantic world is fake and she’s doing her best to wake up to the reality.
My name is Natalie. I’m a chubby blonde working my ass off. Even though I’m not living in New York (yet) but in Prague, I too have a small apartment I live in on my own. I have a small white dog who listens to my commands when he’s in the mood or if he’s gonna get a treat out of it. I’m the biggest cynic when it comes to love and all of my rants about how much love and life sucks can be found on this blog. So far I’m just missing the hit in the head and Liam Hemsworth.
Isn’t it romantic is a romantic comedy making fun of romantic comedies.
Spoiler alert!
The whole point is to fall in love. The perfect guy turns out to be a bastard like usual. The goofy neighborhood boy seems like the one even though it took her a while to figure out. But in the end, all she ever needed was to love herself and the rest fell right into its place.
Natalie is played by phenomenal Rebel Wilson. The whole casting is just awesome. The duo of Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine is just perfect and I’m glad Hollywood knows it. Liam Hemsworth plays the perfectly wrong guy who just learned the world beguiling. This was the first time I saw Priyanka Chopra in a movie ever and I loved it.
The movie is full of great quotes but it’s definitely not for everyone. In general, it’s not that good of a movie. It’s easy and predictable. It’s so relatable and deep only if you lived it. If you’re on the other side of the romance. Then you’ll be hanging on every moment because it’s like a mirror.
To be fair I just loved the first half of the movie more, especially Natalies rant about why romantic movies suck.
I just couldn’t resist. Here is the full Isn’t it romantic rant I love so much so you can see how awesome and relatable it is:
I don’t know how it ends. Do they end up together?
This movie ends as all stupid romcoms do. The girl gets the guy, and then, finally, that’s what makes her happy.
And what’s wrong with that?
Because she should be happy with other things in her life, like her great career that she’s worked hard for. It’s a romantic comedy. They’re the best. I mean, life can be so sad. I try to wake up smiling, then I turn on the news and I’m like…
[looks sad]
And then I turn on Sweet Home Alabama, and I’m like…
[she smiles]
I mean, have you seen that movie? It’s literally a masterpiece.
A masterpiece of shit. Whitney, all those movies are lies, set to terrible pop songs.
I love those songs. And those movies are not lies.
Uh, yes, they are. People waking up in bed with full hair and makeup. It’s so unrealistic. Every time someone puts on a pair of pants, it turns into a whole montage.
Yeah, because trying on clothes is fun.
For you.Yeah, what about how there’s always, like, some main chick, and she’s super clumsy. She’s always like…
[pretends to trip]
“Oh! Whoops!” And everyone goes, “She’s so charming.” No. In real life, people would think she had muscular dystrophy.
Your flaws are what make you beautiful.
Uh, your flaws are what make you ugly. That’s why they’re called flaws. And then, like, in those movies, when there are two women in the same workplace, they have to be like mortal enemies. Look at us. Like, I love you, I think you’re the best. The idea that two women can’t root for each other at work is just disgusting.
And apparently, there’s no HR at any of those businesses in the rom-com world, because there’s no diversity, and people are always boning their co-workers.
Oh, and don’t even get me started about the cliché gay best friend whose sole purpose in the story is just to help the main hot chick. And like, does he have a job? Like, what’s going on in his life? Who cares? It’s so insulting, don’t you think?
And then they always have some stupid voiceover that comes on to tell you what you’re supposed to think. You know what I think? Act better.
For someone who hates romantic comedies, you have certainly thought about this a lot. What about how, at the end of those romcoms, they always do this stupid, like slow-motion running sequence? And, like they’re trying to break up a wedding, or get their lover back. Well, guess what? He doesn’t love you. That’s why he’s not currently with you or marrying you.
He does love you, and he’s there to complete you.She just hates happy endings.
Because it’s not the end. They stop it there because what happens next is, like, really shit. Nobody’ll wanna see that. It’s unhealthy for little girls to watch that stuff and thik that’s how life’s gonna be.
I think it’s nice to be reminded of how beautiful and full of love life can be.
Nope.
The main quote of Isn’t it romantic got to be:
“You’re blind to love. You don’t even see it.”
Natalie is trying to be more open to love and obviously she’s successful in the end. She realizes she has a perfect life as it is + she got the guy.
I was hooked by the first few lines set to the pretty woman song:
You see, Natalie, love’s not a fairy tale. There are no happy endings.
There is always going to be a happy ending.
No, darling. Someone might marry you for a visa, that’s about it.
It’s a sweet rom-com with a lot of cynism and realism. I’m so grateful for the scene of Natalia running without a sports bra and holding her boobs while doing it because that’s real life.
Recommending.
Good stuff
I can see why you would relate. But keep in mind, you didn’t need a crack to the head; you’re just working your ass off, looking for love. Nothing could be more human. Great post.
Sorry if you mind but I just appreciated the work
Sorry, I was trying to comment on the article, not your comment. Misclicked on my phone.
It’s ok sir mistakenly u replied on my comment so I am upset now you cleared the thing now I feel better .Sir , I am also a blogger .
Natalie,
This is really good but I liked your post about the different Marks so much more. It’s my favorite one of yours I have read so far. Why did you put some of this one in caps? I am hoping I can get some help from someone sometime about how to get more pictures on my blog posts. I guess I can only put my own pictures up and the ones I have been picking are copyrighted but I have no idea. I am having a lot of trouble with that. Keep writing. You’re sarcastically funny and cynical like me and I love it. Might watch this movie as long as it isn’t too graphic. I agree with you that most romantic comedies are crap but they’re still fun to watch.

Fantastic post. I’ll definitely be watching this film but I also love Rebel Wilson as an actress. She rocks 🤗 X
I’ll have to watch this one. 🙂
